The Horns of Canzo – Pt. 1

Walkthrough – Poor (Normal) Difficulty

Note: All doors, chests, etc. that require keys are noted. Everything else is either unlocked or can be unlocked with your picks.

Lonzo's Saloon:

You begin near a sign pointing the way to the Village and the Woods. The easiest and most urgent objective is to go to the shop and buy something. You have almost no equipment, so do this as soon as you have enough loot - you may need your blackjack!

Head east to Lonzo's Saloon, pick the "Drunk Guard's Key" from the guard outside the door then go in. Behind the bar you can pick up a purple goblet (25), a gold coinstack (+ 25 = 50), a gold vase (+ 100 = 150), 2 large plates (+ [2 x 50] = 250) and 3 small plates (+ [3 x 25] = 325). One of the men sitting at the tables has a purse (+ 100 = 425), and there are 2 gold coinstacks (+ [2 x 25] = 475) sitting on the table beside him. The man standing in front of the fire also has a purse (+ 100 = 575) and on the mantelpiece there's a purple goblet (+ 25 = 600). There is a Treebeast mask (+ 50 = 650) on the chimney breast.

Take the gold goblet (+ 25 = 675) from the table by the ladies then go through the curtain on the south wall into the alcove with the bathroom doors. Open the Ladies' (Ooops - it's occupied!) and snatch the purse (+ 100 = 775) on the floor.

Back out in the main room, go down the stairs to the wine cellar and look in between the barrels on the shelf on the left for a tiny box. Pick it open and inside you'll find "The Water Key" and a scroll that suggests a visit to Book Archive room #1543. When you pick up the key, you receive objectives to find all 4 elemental keys. That's it for the Saloon, so leave and continue east.

After you go around the corner, there's a stream on your right. Jump in and search the south end for a statue (+ 25 = 800). That completes your loot objective of 800g. Now walk to the middle of the bridge and look NW to locate a silver nugget (+ 25 = 825) on a ledge on the left bank. To get it you must go west off the bridge and climb the steep slope to the north. Turn right at the top, slide down and pick the nugget up. You'll probably take a point or two of damage, but if you happened to pick up the deer leg from the Inn you will heal a bit if you eat it now. (There's also a loaf of bread on the far side of the stream by a fire. While you're over there, check the top of the flat rock nearby for a moss arrow.)

Jump into the water and swim through the underwater hole that is right below this ledge. Turn right at the corner - partway along the passageway you'll be notified that you've found Secret #1. Once you reach the middle where the fish is swimming, go down through the hole on the right (S) and you'll come up in a round hole. There's a silver nugget (+25 = 850) sitting above you.

When you've got your breath back return to the center and check the plants on the bottom for a gold nugget (+ 75 = 925). Now swim through the north hole and at the end, near the grate, there's another gold nugget (+ 75 = 1000). There's no air hole here, so quickly swim back to the center and over to the south hole to get your breath back. There's no need to go through the last opening right now. Swim back out to the stream, climb out and head back past the Saloon.

Walk past the spot where you started and follow the path along the river. If you would like some extra loot that is difficult to get, stop at the top of the ladder and look down across the river. See the boat? In the cave behind it is a gold nugget.

The easiest way to get to the cave is to walk north along the path above the river to the far end just before you cross the bridge, then take a running jump into the water. Aim as far out as possible so you get right over by the far wall. As the current carries you along, you can mantle out by the boat fairly easily. Go through the reeds and collect the nugget (+ 75 = 1075).

Getting back is harder. A speed potion helps, but you don't need one. Try making a mighty leap to the left (north) of the amethyst rock near the bottom of the rope. If you mantle as soon as you touch the water, then with any luck you can pull yourself up onto the rock. From there you can jump to the rope quite easily.

The Weapons Shop:

You have enough loot now to get yourself some equipment. Walk north then turn left at the corner. Turn left into the courtyard outside the Weapons Shop and go in. Buy the blackjack (cost 75g). (To buy an item, just highlight the item itself and click. It will appear in the box with the coloured cloud in the middle and you can take it from there.)

Pick the flare from the Shopkeeper's waist and underneath you'll see he's carrying the "Backdoor Key". Use it to unlock the back door and go in. Push the button under the shelf on the right then go back to the shop and look at the mat inside the front door. It's moved aside and below, there's a red key. Take it and go back into the back room.

There are 3 gold coinstacks, (+ [3 x 25] = 1150) sitting on the shelf beside another copy of the "Backdoor key". Use the red key to unlock the chest here. Inside you'll find a crowbar and a couple of fire arrows.

Return to the shop and behind the "Ice Bomb" displayed on one wall you can pick up a blue key. Go around to the front of the special display case in the center of the shop and look near the bottom for a small door with a lockbox beside it. Use the blue key to unlock the door and behind it you'll find flares and moss arrows. Now it's time to buy some more equipment. I'd suggest including at least one rope arrow (cost 200g) in your purchases, as you'll definitely need it, as well as your sword (cost 250g).

Buy a broadhead arrow as well (cost 25g) then return to the back room and shoot it at the target to get Secret #2. (Or if you're good at darts, score a bullseye instead.) Go back out to the shop and look to your left. There's an opening that wasn't there before, and there are 2 levers and a button on the wall. The two levers lower the glass on two of the wall displays out in the shop and you can help yourself to some free equipment. The button opens the central display case and you can take the really good stuff! There's an ice arrow, acid arrows, fire bombs, flash arrows, plus other goodies. To use most of them, you'll have to use whatever key you have bound to go to "Next Weapon". Check your control settings if you're not sure what it is.

The Boarded-up House:

Leave the shop, go north, then turn right (E) past the waterfall and turn left into a red-lit alcove. Look above your head on the east side and you'll see an old stump. Sink a rope arrow into it and climb up. Be very, very careful up here because there's a rather nasty fellow hanging around. Once you've dealt with him, pick up a silver nugget (+ 25 = 1175) hidden in the corner where he was standing. Smash the boards across the north opening, jump down and follow the path to a window. Open it to get Secret #3 then enter the building.

There's some flare mixture on the table, though I don't think there's any use for it. Go through the door, climb a ladder, open the hatch at the top and you'll be in a room with some boxes and a window. Smash the glass, use the boxes to get out through the window, cross the rooftop and enter the next building through the window. Drop down through the hole in the floor and check the floor in the SE corner for 3 coins (+ [3 x 25] = 1250). Go through to the room with a ladder, pick up a coin in the NW corner (+ 25 =1275) and then climb the ladder. Go into a small office with a broken chair. Look under the chair for a red key.

Climb back down the ladder and look for a tiny lever on the base of the post nearby. Flip it to get Secret #4. This opens a small panel in the north wall of the next room for a short time.Don't go through it now, but rope arrow back up through the hole in the ceiling instead. Go through the window, back into the first building, down to the lower floor and unlock the east door with the red key you found. Inside, go through two wood doors then climb the two ladders in the tower. Crawl out of the opening at the top and enter a hallway.

Book Repository:

Walk up the hallway and look to the left. There's a guard standing by a table that has the "Book Room #1543" key sitting on it, as well as a note to read. There are 2 doors in the hallway. The north one opens out into a courtyard at the First Alp gate. The west one takes you into another hallway - at the far end, there's a set of crossed swords on the wall. If you frob this, the mat below your feet slides away! This is a trap and you'll drop to your death, unless you use a slowfall. It's a waste of a potion, though, as you'll only end up opening a door back into the building where you were earlier, so ignore it.

Instead, open the courtyard door and wait. When the guards finish their conversation they will eventually take up positions facing away from you. Sneak out and BJ them. The guard closest to the big gate is wearing a purse (+ 100 = 1375. Help yourself to it and then pull the lever to open the big gate.

Don't leave that way, but instead go back into the building, retrace your steps down the ladders and at the bottom, use "Book Room #1543" key to unlock the metal door in the room with the wooden doors. Go inside and read the three books. Leave the room, head west, climb the ladder and go through the window to the other building. Drop down through the hole, frob the lever on the post (if you left it in the open position, frob it twice) then go into the room with the hole in the ceiling and crawl out through the secret door. It doesn't stay open long, so if it closes on you frob the lever twice to open it again.

Climb the ladder to the upper floor and use the "Drunk Guard's Key" to open the locked chest. Inside you'll find some ice bombs. Head back down the ladder, open the hatch at the top of the ramp and go outside. Turn left and climb over the wall onto the path.

Head left (W), go around the corner and you'll see a large tree trunk lying above the path on the right. Put a rope arrow into it, climb up, jump onto the slope beside the trunk and walk to the top. There's a frogbeast egg here as well as a gold nugget (+ 75 = 1450). Jump back down to the path and retrieve your rope arrow. Keep an eye out for some guards that patrol this path. One of them is wearing a purse (+ 100 = 1550) and you can help yourself to a broadhead from the archer's quiver.

Go back up the path past the house with the gate, and continue until you go through the big metal gate at the 1st Alp that you opened earlier from the inside. Turn left (E), go around the corner and up some stairs to a tunnel with 2 grates on the wall on the right side. Walk on and you'll see a small metal tower sitting on a wooden base. At the far side of the base there's a locked door and you need a key. Walk carefully on past the streetlamp, then hide in the shadows and wait for a patrolling archer. He's wearing a silver key.

Use this key to unlock the door in the tower base. Lean in and flip the lever on the left then turn the wheel on the right and you'll have found Secret #5. One of the grates back in the tunnel you just came through has opened. Climb through and jump down. Crawl through a pipe, climb the ladders at the far side and go through two doors at the top. Turn left, open the door on the right (E) and enter a mine tunnel. Ride the mine car or walk to the far end but take note of a blocked tunnel on the right. You'll be back here later on.

The 2nd Alp:

Open the door, go in and walk across a metal floor. There's a sewer hatch to the right but it's locked and you don't have the key yet, so continue straight ahead and through the opposite door. Turn right up a hallway and there's a barracks room on your left, a bathroom straight ahead and a hallway to the right.

There are several guards in the barracks room. One of them is wearing a purse (+ 100 = 1650) and there are 3 gold coinstacks (+ [3 x 25] = 1725) sitting on the end table. There's an explosive charge in the left-hand chest and a basketball in the right-hand one. It is almost impossible to pick the right-hand chest open without waking the guards.

Look under the left side of the sink in the bathroom for a small lever. Flip it to get Secret #6. You'll hear something open in the showers. Walk to the last stall, which is out of order, and there will be a small panel open in the back. Here, you'll find a tiny gold ring (+ 100 = 1825), a gold coinstack (+ 25 = 1850) and a silver statue (+ 40 = 1890).

Return to the hallway and turn left. A door on the right about halfway up opens into a small guardroom that overlooks the courtyard. Check under the table and you'll find a tiny gold ring (+ 100 = 1990). Make sure you stay in the shadows as there are cannons in the courtyard that will fire at you if you're spotted. At the end of the hallway, go up the stairs, read the notice on the wall, and then press the button to open the red doors. Flip the lever on the right wall to start the decontamination and then the lever on the left wall to open the far door. Go through and take the small elevator up, climb the ladder to the top of the tower and you'll find some moss arrows in a chest.

Climb back down, open the gate and take an arrow and the "Sewer Key" from the guard on the walkway. (If the guard trips the alarm every time you get close, try dealing with him at arm's length.  If this doesn't work, try shooting a broadhead over his head at the stonework. When he goes to investigate the noise, follow him, crouching against the right-hand wall, and deal with him after he turns back.)

You can't unlock the next gate, but it is possible to mantle up onto the wall just to the right of it. Walk across the top of the gate and jump down to the wall of the building beyond. Once you're down on the ground, look behind the building for a hole in the ground. Climb down in and you'll have found Secret #7. The hole contains some food, a book and a ring (+ 100 = 2090). Climb back out and sneak around into the building.

Read a book on the table then look on top of the cabinet in the SE corner for "an oxidized key". Continue through the room, out the other door, through another door and you'll see a red door on your left that leads into another decontamination room. Go through it, out the other side and take the elevator up to the tower. The guard here is wearing a purse (+ 100 = 2190). Head back down, through the contamination chamber, out the other side and down into the machinery room opposite.

In the corner of the room find a detonation arrow in a chest. Take it, and then go through the wooden door in the SE corner, along a hallway and through another door. You'll enter the guardroom that is on the side of the courtyard opposite to where you found the tiny ring. Flip the big floor lever and the metal gate out in the courtyard will open. Return through the building to the first small room (the one where you found the oxidized key), go outside and take a purse (+ 100 = 2290) from the guard over by the gate in the SW corner.

Walk north up the path and turn right into an underground tunnel. There's a wooden door on the left at the end that you can pick open (though it takes a long time) and in this room, you'll find some flares in a chest, and two gold coinstacks (+ [2 x 25] = 2340). Leave the tunnel, watch for one of the two guards that patrol this path, and relieve him of "Key N*102a". Just opposite the entrance to the tunnel is a shed beside a windmill. Go into the shed and look beside the bucket for a tiny switch. Flip it to get Secret #8.

The back wall slides open and behind it is a rope down into a hole. Climb down into the tunnel below and follow it, avoiding the steam and you'll come to a hole in the floor. Pick up a moss arrow beside it, jump down and you'll end up in a tunnel. Walk to the end and flip the lever on the wall. A section slides down and you're in the sewer area. Another section of wall opposite is also sliding down. Through this door is the back entrance to Cistern N*102. If you went through there you'd come up right in the grounds of the 3rd Alp Inn.

Go back and open the hatch on the right (N) just before the lamp. Follow that sewer tunnel to the end, climb a ladder and open a sewer hatch at the top. Climb out and you'll be below a guard that is pacing around on top of a small building. Walk around the building to the west side, open the door and go in. Climb the ladders to the hatch, open it and take the "Tower key" and an acid arrow from the guard. The Tower Key will open the locked door on the front of the lower building and give you access to the room where you found the flares a short while ago but there's no point in going through there again.

Return to the sewers and go back to the hatch. Go left, then immediately right, and open the hatch on the left. Head south until you come to a ladder that takes you back up to the sewer grate that you saw after you left the mine shaft. Unlock it with the "Sewer Key" and climb out.

Go back out into the mineshaft and walk down to the tunnel on the left that is blocked by boulders. Drop the explosive device by the boulders, go back around the corner then lean out far enough to shoot the explosive with the detonation arrow. The rocks will be blown out of the tunnel and you can enter. (If you don't have the explosive device you can bash your way through with sword or blackjack, but it takes a long time!) Partway down you'll get a message that you've found Secret #9. You'll find 3 gold nuggets (+ [3 x 75] = 2565) and 2 silver nuggets (+ [2 x 25] = 2615) lying scattered on the ground.

There's a hole at the end of the right-hand tunnel and you CAN go down it if you have a slow fall potion and get into the spider section of the mission but it is very difficult to do undetected. Instead, return to the mine and head back south. Before you climb up onto the platform, look underneath it for a gold nugget (+ 75 = 2690).

Go back inside, climb down the ladders, through the metal tunnel, and jump up onto the platform and exit into the walkway above the 1st Alp. Turn left and head back through the 1st Alp gate and down to the path by the Weapons Shop. Now's the time to stock up on more equipment if you need it.

Once you've done that, go back past the saloon to the bridge across the stream, jump into the water and look for a passageway that is full of jagged, teeth-shaped rocks. Use your sword to smash them. (You have to jump to get out of the water to be able to swing your sword sometimes. They have to be smashed one by one, stalagmites and stalactites both.) Beware as you enter the next area, as there are some nasty dragonflies lurking, but you can kill them with one arrow or a blow from your sword.

The Cemetery:

Jump into the waterway, turn right and follow it. It will get very deep just before you get to the waterfalls. Dive in and search the bottom for a gold key. Once you have it, climb back out on the north shore, walk up the ramp and pick open the metal door. Try to stay in the dark as there's a "surprise" waiting inside. Once you've dealt with it (a fire arrow works wonders), go in and take the "key with a faded sign" from the rack on the wall. Use it to unlock the door in the west wall, walk down the stairs and unlock the door on the right at the bottom with the same key. The chest inside unlocks with the "oxidized key" that you found earlier and contains a battle-axe, a diamond (+100 = 2790) and a papyrus. You must read the scroll to cast a spell that changes events in the cemetery.

Go back to the glade, through the red passageway and walk all the way back past the saloon and the waterfall. Don't turn left for the Weapons Shop but continue past and into the graveyard on the right at the far end.

The gates will close behind you and a grave will open. Behind the statue in the NE corner are two jars (+ [2 x25] = 2840). Jump in and pick up a tiara (+ 75 = 2915), a water crystal and the scroll. Hide in the NE corner and then read it - a bunch of zombies will appear in the graveyard when you do. Luckily, some of them have keys to the gate. Get a key and let yourself out, then return to the glade where you found the dragonflies.

Visiting the Monks:

Go back up the ramp, turn right at the top instead of going in the door and follow the path until you enter a cave. You'll be facing a big grey rock. Walk just to the left (W) of it and then walk up the cave wall. When you're close, you'll see it's really crisscrossed vines. Take out your sword and start slashing them. When you've broken through them all, you'll have found Secret #10 and opened a passageway into another area.

Walk through, bear to the right and you'll enter a small clearing with a passageway ahead and another off to the left with 3 frogbeasts in the middle. Walk into the one straight ahead (NE, with the red sunlight shining in) and wait in the shadows for a monk to wander in from the mine tunnel to the north. Take the "pump room 5" key that he's wearing and head up the tunnel.

There's a short passageway that branches off to the left and ends in a hole. If you slide down to the bottom, you'll find a rope arrow in the bushes. You'll then need to use it to rope arrow up to the hole in the far wall (but you can retrieve the rope arrow so you add one to your inventory), jump in and either destroy the frogbeasts or sneak past them back into the mine area you just left.

Past the side tunnel, follow the main tunnel to the end where you'll enter a room with 3 doors. Go through the metal one to the east and into a hallway. Walk past the room on the left, through the door on the end, turn left through another door and enter a bedroom with a man sleeping on the bed. Read the book and crumpled note, pick up a breath potion from the table and look on the bed beside the man for a dark grey key. Take it, go back into the hallway and into the room you by-passed before. Read the book on the desk, which tells you that Sir Galvano disappeared in the forest with the Fire Key and apparently was transformed into some sort of beast. Slash the banner that is hanging on the north wall and you'll have found Secret #11. Behind it is a safe that unlocks with the dark grey. Inside, you'll find a gold torc (+ 300 = 3215), an ankh (+ 50 = 3265), and 5 gold coinstacks (+ [5 x 25] = 3390).

The Earth Key:

Now that you have a clue where to look for the Fire key, return to the forest through the tunnel and you'll be beside the big grey rock again. Turn hard right (W) and go through the green-lit tunnel. After you enter there will be a big rockslide behind you and the tunnel will be blocked. Don't worry about that, just continue on but cautiously because there are spiders ahead! Once you've dealt with the first two spiders, climb up into the higher passageway at the end (N) and you'll be overlooking a large cave occupied by several more spiders. You can pick them off from up here if you're a good shot. Once they're dead, search the big green one and you'll find it was carrying the "Earth Key".

If you look above the passageway that you jumped out of, you'll see the shaft that you could have come down from the mine. Below it, on the ground, there may be some broadhead arrows. Over in the NE corner of the spider cave is a silver nugget (+ 25 = 3415) and on the west wall of the cave is a "spider lock". "Use" the Earth key on it twice and a doorway will open opposite it.

Go through and you'll see a gem (+ 100 = 3515) floating above a platform surrounded by lava and steam vents. A very nasty skeleton appears when you try to grab it but if you go back into the left corner (N), you'll be behind him when he shows up and he won't see you. You can dispose of the skeleton fairly easily with 2 or 3 water arrows and he leaves behind a fire arrow. When you frobbed the gem a rock on the far wall slid up. The exit behind the rock takes you back into the area where you found the frogbeasts. Head through the south passageway and keep going south until you end up back beside the big grey rock.

The Fire Key:

This time, turn left (E) and climb up onto a path. The first area is populated by burricks who breathe insect clouds at you so it's best to not disturb them. Look off to the right and you'll see a shed in the distance. The shed door unlocks with the gold key you found in the water in the dragonfly glade. Inside, there's a bracelet (+ 25 = 3540) lying on the floor and inside the chest you'll find a speed potion. Walk NE along the edge of this raised area, drop down into a lower section and you'll find an invisibility potion lying on the ground.

Continue along this path. When you get to a multi-coloured pointy mushroom (which is poisonous) bear right. A little further on is a small red button mushroom. Pick it and save it, because it will work like a speed potion when you eat it. (To the east is a valley with a fountain of some kind in the middle. This area has no purpose on Poor but does on the other two difficulty settings.)

Go clockwise around the tree to the north and look for a small blue mushroom (in the blue glow before you get to the pitcher plant). Pick it and save it, as it works as a healing potion. Walk west, and pick another small red button mushroom on the left, just before you reach a red flower. When you reach the flower turn north, climb over a big tree trunk and walk up the hill to an opening.

Don't veer to the right because you end up in a glade where a nymph is guarding a stump. It's best to avoid this creature because if you try to hurt it, it multiplies!

What comes next can be tricky - you are advised to save often until you get to the Inn.

You'll see a suspension bridge across a chasm. Get across quickly because the center collapses! Also keep an eye out for bats as they will attack you with insect swarms. On the far side of the bridge, you'll see a lake of quicksand. Drink the speed potion you found in the shed (or eat a magic mushroom) and run or kangaroo hop to the far side. Keep looking up to keep your head above the surface as much as possible and walk up the ramp on the far side into a tunnel with a river of lava down the middle and a steam jet shooting out. Turn left, walk along the side staying up away from the lava, go around the corner and out the far end.

Look at the far end of this cave and you'll see the monster that used to be Sir Galvano. He's fire related, so use water or ice arrows or an ice bomb to destroy him. Once he's gone, go over and pick up the Fire Key.

The Air Key:

Look way, way up above and you'll see a cable trolley of sorts going back and forth. That's where you need to get to now. There's a rock pillar in the NW corner. Mantle up onto it and from it, jump to the ladder on the north wall. Climb it to the ledge above and jump to the ledge to the east. Now hop over to the ledge with the white crystal on it.  Climb onto the crystal and jump to the next ledge.  Mantle up to the blue ledge above, and jump to the rope that is hanging down above the ledge below.

At the top, jump to the small ledge to the north then mantle up onto the next one. Jump from it to the one with a couple of stairs set into it and climb them to the top. There's a rock walkway that extends to the far end of the cavern but it's broken in the middle so you'll have to jump the gap. Use the entire runway to get up speed - a speed potion or a magic mushroom will make the jump easier. Jump over the burrick corpse and go to the end where you can jump onto the ladder of the trolley.

When you're on it, keep climbing a bit every once in awhile or you'll gradually slip down and fall off the bottom. At the far end of its route, you'll need to jump off. Try for the ladder, but if you land on the lower ledges, watch out! Boulders fall and will quite often kill you unless you're lucky enough to land in just the right place. If you do land on a lower ledge, use the climbing holds to the right of the northern ledge as though you were climbing a ladder.

Climb up to the platform with the broken walkway. There is a wooden beam facing you across the chasm. Shoot a rope arrow into the end. Above and right you can see another piece of wood - it's just above the left side of a small hole. If you have another rope arrow, shoot it into that piece of wood also. (If you don't have another, don't worry - the first one can be re-used.)

Now look at the ledge to the east. The Air Key is lying on the ground, so jump over and pick it up. Then do a Tarzan act with the rope(s) and climb to the small hole, which contains a flashmine and a gold nugget (+75 = 3615). Jump over to land on top of the canopy of the trolley when it goes past. Ride it until you can jump onto the west wall and clamber into the green tunnel. (If you miss the trolley and it's your lucky day, you may land on the west wall below the tunnel and stick there!)

The 3rd Alp Inn:

Hop onto the big vine and climb down into the tunnel below. You'll see a steam jet blocking the way, so frob the wheel on the valve to turn it off. Walk past and turn left (N) at the corner. There's a lock mechanism on the wall by the base of a ladder. Pick it and the hatch at the top will open. Climb out and you'll come up behind the 3rd Alp Inn. Climb up by the back door and walk along the north side of the building. In the far corner you'll find some moss arrows. Return to the back door and enter.

In the bar, you'll find Key N*102B as well as a bottle of wine (+ 50 = 3665) and a gold plate (+ 50 = 3715). Go around the corner to the reception desk and the woman will give you the key to Room 4. (You can also pick up the key for Room #1 from the key rack.) There is a gold ring (+ 100 = 3815) in the Room #2 slot. There's a slowfall potion and a gold coinstack (+ 25 = 3840) sitting on the shelves past reception.

Upstairs in Room 1 is a guard wearing a breath potion. However, Room 4 is your room - let yourself in, read the scroll and the mission will end.

End of Mission
